ASUS’s Maximus VIII Hero Alpha Features Native RGB LED Headers

ASUS has just announced the Maximus VIII Hero Alpha motherboard. This LGA1151 motherboard is based on the Intel Z170 express chipset and ASUS claims that it is the first motherboard with native support for multi-color RGB LED headers.

The board has a RGB LED controller and a Windows App that lets you set the RGB color across two independent 4-pin headers, which are typically connected to RGB LED strips. The ROG logo on the PCH heatsink lights up with an RGB LED as well and can also be controlled. ASUS will be selling a reference LED strip for this board called AURA, which will be sold separately.

The board itself has a feature-set much like the Maximus VIII Hero with a 10-phase CPU VRM, four DDR4 DIMM slots, and two PCI-Express 3.0 x16 slots. Instead of SATA Express on this board you get two U.2 16 Gb/s connectors as well as six SATA 6 Gb/s ports. This board also will have USB 3.1 with both type-c and type-A ports.

Expect the board to have a premium over the original Maximus VIII Hero.
