Laptop RTX 4070 Beats M2 Max With 38-Core GPU In OpenCL Benchmark

As additional performance numbers for the M2 Pro and M2 Max are leaked, we have a better understanding of their capabilities or, more precisely, limits. Currently, Apple’s M2 Max has a maximum configuration with a 12-core CPU and 38-core GPU, which may appear excessive; yet, in an OpenCL benchmark, the graphics processor loses to a laptop-equipped RTX 4070 GPU.

There are no power restriction data supplied for the laptop RTX 4070; thus, the performance differential might be considerably greater. Mac14,6 is the unique identification for Apple’s hardware, and in addition to the 38-core GPU, it has 64GB of unified RAM. Given that the most recent Mac mini cannot be outfitted with an M2 Max, it will certainly be the company’s new 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro; nonetheless, the GPU fails to outperform a Samsung-branded notebook equipped with an RTX 4070.

This Windows 11 notebook also features a 14-core, 20-thread Intel Core i9-13900HK processor; thus, it’s designed for users seeking a powerful computing and graphics device. The Samsung notebook achieves a score of 102,130 on the OpenCL benchmark, whereas the M2 Max with a 38-core GPU only achieves 75,139. That is a performance gap of 35%, and there is one further point to make.

The power limit of the laptop RTX 4070 was not specified on Geekbench 5, but gaming notebooks that are somewhat thicker with more powerful cooling solutions would likely have a larger advantage over Apple’s new 2023 MacBook Pro series, as their GPU power limit will be greater. Keep in mind, though, that Geekbench 5’s OpenCL ratings do not accurately reflect real-world performance, and other applications may run drastically differently on the two PCs.

In addition, we do not know if the nameless MacBook Pro with M2 Max was thermally throttled, which may have contributed to this result. It looks like we will have to wait for further data, including thermals, to arrive before we can offer an unbiased conclusion on the problem. In spite of the Samsung notebook’s performance advantage, there is one area in which it cannot compete, and that is battery life.

Apple claims that the 16-inch MacBook Pro’s battery life is the longest of any portable Mac to date, lasting up to 22 hours on a single charge. If you’re still considering making the step to a newer model, we’ve discussed five improvements that are exclusive to the 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro that should seal the deal.
