A popular YouTuber and overclocker, Der8auer, paid a visit to a german PC hardware retailer, Caseking. The retailer has a program called ‘Kill my case.’ It is similar to the Pimp my Ride show but for PCs. Caseking got hold of a PC from a burned flat so Der8auer could inspect it.
During the inspection, Der8auer learned that the PC’s processor AMD Ryzen 7 2700X) had survived the fire. Proper protection from the large AIO pump might be the reason the fire did not directly affect the CPU. Other components: the memory, power supply, and motherboards were destroyed. One of the fans completely melted.
It was surprising to see that the card was intact. It was in one complete piece with little damage to the plastic shroud. Since graphic cards are designed for withstanding higher temperatures, Der8auer was curious whether the card is operational or not.
The card was disassembled, and in-depth cleaning was performed. Then the card was checked through a multimeter, and a DisplayPort cable was plugged into one of the connectors, which still looked good. To verify that the card was running fine, Der8auer put a liquid nitrogen pot on the GPU. To his surprise, the card was fully operational, as you can see in the results below.
The burnt graphic card was MSI RTX 2070 SUPER from the GAMING series. The card’s cooler was completely destroyed but the internals were safe due to the protection from multiple support and heat-dissipating brackets. This experiment proves how well cards are designed to withstand extreme temperatures.
