VIK-on, a Russian YouTuber and Modder, is back with yet another GeForce RTX graphics card modification.
VIK-on’s former efforts in upgrading the memory of GeForce graphics cards should be familiar to our readers.
He was able to increase the memory of the GeForce RTX 3070 from 11GB to 22GB and the memory of the RTX 2080 Ti from 11GB to 22GB.
This time, he decided to upgrade the memory capacity of the GeForce RTX 2060 based on the Turing TU106 GPU to 12GB. Surprisingly, this mod occurs just two weeks before NVIDIA announces this upgrade officially.
We reported two months ago that NVIDIA is working on an updated RTX 2060 that will be available in January of next year.
As it turns out, NVIDIA intends to release this card before Christmas, on December 7th, to be exact. We haven’t heard anything to suggest that this date is incorrect; in fact, Overclocking.com just reported that this date has been confirmed with their sources.
At the moment, it’s unclear what changes, aside from the memory upgrade, NVIDIA will make to this new card. The RTX 2060 debuted with a cut-down TU106 GPU with 1920 CUDA cores and 6GB 192-bit memory clocked at 14Gbps. Exactly such memory was sourced by VIK-on for his upgrade, except they have twice the capacity per module.
The modder used the 14 Gbps modules from a mobile GPU, which typically offer such a bandwidth. The card is correctly recognized by software such as GPU-Z where it reports on 12288 MB capacity. The card appears to work just fine, except for the ‘tiny’ problem with occasional black screens. This is, in fact, the same bug that VIK-on encountered with previous mods. However, the fix is relatively simple, the GPU simply needs to be put into performance mode through NVIDIA Control Panel 3D settings.
VIK-on just tested the GPU in crypto mining and Unigine Superposition tests, where it performed roughly the same as a 6GB model. The altered card has been sent out to the Russian media outlet Pro Hi-Tech, which will thoroughly test it.
