New XFX Radeon R9 380 Crimson Edition Unlocks To A 380X

XFX has just launched a new Radeon R9 380 graphics card in their Radeon R9 380 Crimson Edition, which is made exclusively for the Chinese Market. This is sort of a late entry for XFX as the Radeon R9 380 was introduced way back in 2015, but this card has a really cool feature many R9 380's do not. The card has the ability to be unlocked to a full R9 380X graphics card with the flick of a switch.

If you can remember these cards were actually originally planned for a September 2014 release as the Radeon R9 285X. The release was postponed because it would fail to compete against the just released NVIDIA GeForce GTX 980 / 970, which had a much better performance per watt ratio. Now that the GTX 960 is out AMD is looking to fill in the performance gap between the 960 and 970. The Radeon R9 380X will have 2048 Stream Processors and 4GB of GDDR5 memory across a 256-bit interface. We have photos of three upcoming R9 380X's from ASUS, XFX and Gigabyte.

It looks like AMD is readying a new SKU to take advantage of the pricing gap between the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 960 and GTX 970. This will be the R9 380X and it will be based on the 28nm "Tonga" silicon. The R9 380X is likely to max out the specifications on the "Tonga" silicon, offering 2048 stream processors, 128 TMUs, 32 ROPs, and a 384-bit wide GDDR5 interface that can hold either 3GB or 6GB of memory.
