- Apple says on-device AI workloads run up to 25% faster than on M5.
- The laptop adds Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 6 while retaining its Liquid Retina XDR display and port selection.
- Pricing starts at $1,999, with 16GB of unified memory and 1TB of storage in the base configuration.
M6 focuses on performance and AI
The M6 chip has a 12-core CPU and 12-core GPU, each with two more cores than the M5 configuration. Apple says the GPU delivers up to 30% faster graphics and up to 25% faster on-device AI performance compared with M5. Its Dual 16-core Neural Engine is rated up to 1.9 times faster than the previous generation, while the GPU’s Neural Accelerators are designed to handle AI tasks locally.
Apple also reports up to 13 times faster LLM prompt processing compared with the 13-inch MacBook Pro with M1. Those are company-provided comparisons; independent performance testing will show how the new system performs across real-world workloads. The base model includes 16GB of unified memory, configurable up to 32GB. Memory bandwidth reaches 170GB/s on 24GB and 32GB configurations; the 16GB model is listed at 153GB/s.
Connectivity and hardware carry forward
The M6 model brings Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 6, supplied through Apple’s N1 wireless chip. It retains three Thunderbolt 4 ports, HDMI, MagSafe 3, an SDXC card slot and a headphone jack. The laptop can connect to up to two external displays, and supports fast charging to 50% in about 30 minutes with a compatible high-wattage adapter.
Other returning features include a Liquid Retina XDR display with an optional nano-texture finish, a 12MP Center Stage camera and a six-speaker sound system. The design itself is unchanged, making this primarily a processor and connectivity update for buyers comparing current-generation laptops.
Pricing and availability
The 14-inch MacBook Pro with M6 starts at $1,999 in the U.S., with education pricing from $1,899. Apple lists 1TB of storage in the base configuration, with options to configure memory up to 32GB and storage up to 4TB. The laptop comes in space black and silver.
Pre-orders begin October 28 through Apple’s online store and app in 35 countries and regions, including the U.S. Apple says deliveries and in-store availability start November 6. For owners of recent M-series MacBook Pros, the gains may be incremental; users upgrading from older Intel or M1 systems could see a larger jump, particularly in graphics, AI workloads and battery life.
