As we already mentioned AMD’s Radeon 300 series has already been on sale at Best Buy and at retailers overseas. Kind of funny since these cards have not even been officially announced yet. Since many people already have their hands on these cards they have been testing them and one person did a tear-down which revealed as expected that the Radeon R9 390X is simply a Radeon R9 290X rebrand.
The card the was disassembled was the XFX Radeon R9 390X. Below we have a PCB shot of the R9 290X and you can see how they are almost exactly the same.
So the difference between the two cards is that the memory has been doubled and the clock speeds are a little higher, but the overall board design and GPU appear to be untouched. Interestingly enough the BIOS’s for these cards have already hit the web and people have been able to flash their R9 290X’s to R9 390X’s. Also the coolers for these cards should be completely interchangeable.
