Canon enables Webcam feature on some DSLR, Mirrorless cameras

Many users would love to use their prosumer, DSLR and mirrorless cameras as a webcam. It was a well-needed feature which was possible only by using an Elgato CamLink. Getting a good webcam is an expensive affair now due to COVID-19 lockdown and price gouging. Even before the pandemic, it was a feature many streamers would have loved to have but never seen native support.

It is better late than never. Canon has released an app called EOS Webcam Utility.

Plug-and-play Webcam utility

As the name suggests, this app allows your system to use some of Canon’s DSLRs and mirrorless cameras as webcams. This eliminates the requirement to use capture devices like Elgato Camlink which typically use clean output via HDMI OUT. This webcam utility uses the USB cable that’s usually provided with the webcam. EOS Webcam Utility BETAThe following are the compatible cameras, a combination of older and newer models.

As of now, Canon is the only camera manufacturer to provide this feature. Seeing that this can be enabled easily via USB and cameras used by many streamers, other cameras should follow suit. This way, the requirement to have an adapter disappears. It is unsure if its something Canon will improve on the go and provide as a mainstream option, catering towards a broader userbase and maybe even providing iOS support. The company said the following:

EOS Webcam Utility Beta is a software solution which unlocks webcam-like capabilities for select EOS Inter-Changeable Lens and PowerShot cameras. By connecting your Canon camera to a computer with a USB cable, the camera will be available as a video source for many video conferencing applications. Note that this is a Beta version and it may contain errors.
