If you read our review of the Intel Core i7-8700K we mentioned how hot the chip runs. German retailer Caseking has a solution to this for customers who want to run these chips overclocked and at lower temperatures. They will be offering COre i7-8700K chips that have been binned towards achieving guaranteed speeds of 5 GHz, 5.1 GHz, and 5.2 GHz and on top of that they will be outfitting these chips with a 99.9% purity silver heatspreader.
What Caseking is doing is testing batches of Core i7-8700K chips, delidding them, and then applying Thermal Grizzly’s Conductonaut liquid metal thermal grease and the 99.9% silver heatspreader to improve operating temperatures. They are doing this in partnership with famous overclocker der8auer. The silver IHS has both the Caseking and the der8auer logo on it.
These chips are being sold at premiums obviously. €690 will get you an 8700K that is guaranteed to clock up to 5.0 GHz, €750 will guarantee 5.1 GHz, and a 5.2 GHz overclockable processor will cost €870.
While these are some pretty high premiums Caseking is taking the risk out of the buyers hands. Users will not have to de-lid their own CPUs and hope their processor is binned high enough to achieve good overclocks.
