Here at Computex 2025 Gigabyte was showing off quite a lot of new products and like most of the show they were talking about AI, but they did mention something that definitely caught my attention. They introduced DriverBIOS, which essentially embeds your Wi-Fi driver into the BIOS itself. This is a complete game-changer for PC builders as it will save them so much time. Traditionally when building a PC and installing Windows 11 you would have to download your Wi-Fi driver on a separate machine and put it on a USB drive. Then take that USB drive, put it in the new system and install the driver that way. This process would take around 6 minutes, but with DriverBIOS this process takes 1 second!
The way that Gigabyte has been able to achieve this is by increasing the total flash size on the board from 16MB to 64MB. The introduction of a 64MB BIOS chip marks a notable advancement in motherboard design. Traditionally, most motherboards utilized a 16MB BIOS chip, which limited the amount of data that could be stored. By quadrupling this capacity, Gigabyte not only enhances the motherboard’s functionality but also sets a new standard for future motherboard designs.
This larger BIOS chip, referred to as the Driver BIOS, primarily serves to store the WiFi driver. This is particularly beneficial as Microsoft now requires users to log into a Microsoft Account during the Windows 11 setup process. With the WiFi driver pre-installed, users can connect to the internet immediately, streamlining the setup experience.
