Lexar has introduced its Thor Ultra family of PCIe 5.0 NVMe SSDs, targeting desktop and laptop users who want high-end storage bandwidth in a more cost-conscious design. The M.2 2280 drives omit dedicated DRAM but combine a 6nm controller, Host Memory Buffer support, and Dynamic SLC Cache to reach sequential speeds of up to 11GB/s.
Key takeaways
- PCIe 5.0 x4 interface in a standard M.2 2280 design
- Up to 11,000MB/s sequential reads and 10,000MB/s writes
- Capacities from 512GB to 4TB
- DRAM-less 6nm controller with HMB and Dynamic SLC Cache
- Up to 3,000 TBW endurance and a five-year warranty
- Pricing and retail availability have not been announced
Lexar is positioning the Thor Ultra as “Gen 5 speed for all,” with the lack of onboard DRAM potentially helping reduce manufacturing costs. The company has not yet confirmed pricing, so its value proposition will depend heavily on how it compares with established PCIe 5.0 drives.
Specifications and performance
The family includes 512GB, 1TB, 2TB, and 4TB models. The 1TB, 2TB, and 4TB versions are rated for up to 11,000MB/s sequential reads and 10,000MB/s sequential writes. The entry-level 512GB drive reaches 9,900MB/s reads and 5,000MB/s writes.
| Capacity | Sequential read | Sequential write | Random read/write |
|---|---|---|---|
| 512GB | 9,900MB/s | 5,000MB/s | 900K/1,200K IOPS |
| 1TB | 11,000MB/s | 10,000MB/s | 1,500K/1,900K IOPS |
| 2TB | 11,000MB/s | 10,000MB/s | 2,200K/1,900K IOPS |
| 4TB | 11,000MB/s | 10,000MB/s | 2,000K/1,900K IOPS |
The 2TB model leads the lineup in rated random-read performance at 2.2 million IOPS. These figures place the Thor Ultra well above the theoretical bandwidth ceiling of PCIe 4.0 x4 drives, although faster flagship PCIe 5.0 SSDs can approach 15GB/s sequential reads.
DRAM-less design and thermal management
Rather than using a dedicated DRAM cache, the Thor Ultra relies on HMB and Dynamic SLC Cache. HMB allows the drive to use a portion of system memory for mapping data, while SLC caching can accelerate writes during supported workloads. As with other high-speed PCIe 5.0 SSDs, sustained performance will depend on workload size, cache behavior, and cooling.
Lexar says the 6nm controller includes intelligent power management intended to limit heat generation and reduce thermal throttling. Buyers building compact gaming PCs or laptops should still verify that their system provides adequate M.2 cooling.
Endurance, software, and availability
Endurance scales with capacity: 350 TBW for the 512GB model, 750 TBW for 1TB, 1,500 TBW for 2TB, and 3,000 TBW for 4TB. Each drive carries a five-year limited warranty, or a stated 1.5-million-hour MTBF rating.
Lexar will also support the drives with its DiskMaster Manage software for firmware updates, health monitoring, performance optimization, and data protection features. The company has not disclosed pricing or a retail release schedule, leaving cost as the key unanswered question for PC builders considering the Thor Ultra.
