The latest optional update to Windows 11 (KB5036980) was rolled out late Tuesday and it effectively makes the operating system adware. Adware is of course software that displays ads to support the software author. This new update now puts ads in the “Recommended” section that suggests apps and games for you to download from the Microsoft store.
This update is currently optional, but it will be rolled out in next month’s “Patch Tuesday” update.
This is not the first time Windows 11 essentially acted as adware. Of course OEM versions of the operating system can be pre-installed with bloatware or suggested apps. Typically this software gets installed and user’s just uninstall it once Windows is installed. The update we are seeing today is a bit different as even non-OEM, retail versions of Windows 11 are receiving these ads.
Now you can get rid of these ads, if you head over to Settings > Personalization > Start, and uncheck the toggle that reads “Show recommendations for tips, app promotions, and more.”
