MIIIW BlackIO 83 Mechanical Keyboard Review

Setup & Usage

Getting the BlackIO 83 up and running is quite easy. You can of course use the included USB cable and use it wired. When you are using the keyboard in wired mode it will also charge the keyboard’s 4000 mAh battery. When you plug the keyboard into your PC you won’t need to download any drivers or software, it will just work.

To switch into wireless modes all you have to do is move the switch on the top edge of the keyboard to wireless mode. By default the wireless mode you’ll be on will be the 2.4 GHz mode. Just plug in the USB receiver to an open USB port on your computer and you’ll be good to go. Again no software or anything like that to install.

If you are wanting to connect the keyboard via Bluetooth all you have to do is press FN + 1 for 3 seconds. This will put the keyboard in pairing mode and you should see it in available Bluetooth devices either on your PC or mobile device. If you want to pair with more than one device just press FN + 2 or FN + 3 as you can pair with up to 3 devices via Bluetooth.

I have been using this keyboard for the past couple of weeks and I am really enjoying it. I think the thing that took the most time to get used to was how the keycaps felt. Typically we have PBT or ABS keycaps, but with the BlackIO 83 we have polycarbonate keycaps. These actually feel quite good, which I was honestly surprised with. Sometimes we see clear keycaps, but they sacrifice comfort, but like I said these are very comfortable. The keyboard itself is very solid as well, which has a lot to do with how it is built.

MIIIW is making use of the Kailh Jellyfish mechanical keys switches which are pre-lubed and the stabilizers are lubed as well. These switches are linear and feel really good. For those wondering what typing on this keyboard sounds like here is a sound test.

One of the stars of this keyboard is of course the lighting since we have a transparent case and transparent keycaps. The controls for the lighting are all done on the keyboard so here are some useful commands.

– FN + Left Arrow or Right Arrow will cycle through different lighting effects
– FN + Up Arrow or Down Arrow will cycle through brightness levels
– FN + Shift + Up Arrow or Down Arrow will adjust the effect speed
– FN + Shift + Left Arrow or Right Arrow will cycle through colors
– FN + ESC (Hold for 3 seconds) will reset the backlighting to factory settings

The lighting on this keyboard is pretty amazing and there are over 40 different effects that you can cycle through and 5 different brightness levels.
