Patriot Viper VPR400 RGB Gen4 NVMe Solid State Drive Review

Patriot Viper VPR400 Overview

Taking a first look at the Viper VPR400 it is almost identical to the Viper VPR100 except here we have a black PCB instead of the blue PCB we saw on the VPR100. The drive is covered by a pre-installed heatsink that has Viper logo in the center and two rows of white diffusers for the RGB lighting.

The drive itself is in the M.2 2280 form factor so it is 80mm long. The heatsink is not all that tall, but you still might want to look at clearances on your motherboard.

Flipping the drive over there is a sticker with the serial number and other relevant information on the drive.

The interesting thing when we take the heatsink off is that there are actually no RGB LEDs on the heatsink at all. What Patriot has done is hard-wire the RGB LEDs on to the PCB of the drive itself. This allows you to control the RGB LEDs without any wires.

With the drive fully removed from the heatsink we can get a better look at the components. We have the InnoGrit IG5220 DRAMless controller and Micron 176-layer TLC NAND flash.
