Samsung Announces Odyssey Neo G9 240Hz Gaming Monitor With Mini-LED Backlight

Samsung has refreshed its Odyssey G9 ultra-wide gaming monitor. The refreshed variant is called Odyssey Neo G9. It shares the same mini-LED backlight which is used in Televisions. Samsung claims it to be the first mini-LED curved gaming monitor with Quantum Matrix tech. However, this is not the market’s first-ever mini-LED monitor.

This 49-inch monitor has a 32:9 aspect ratio and it features 1000R curvature with the resolution of 5,120 x 1,440 px. However, the new Quantum Mini LED matrix has some marked advantages when it comes to image quality.

The mini- LEDs measure just 1/40th of a regular LED  which allowed Samsung to use more LEDs for the backlight. This means the Neo G9 has 2,048 dimming zones, up from just 10 on the original monitor that came out just last year.

The Neo G9 has twice the backlight brightness compared to the previous model. Due to this, the monitor got VDE’s (one of Europe’s largest technical-scientific associations)Quantum HDR 2000 certification. The monitor has a 2,000 nits peak brightness (the typical brightness is 420 nits) and an improved static contrast ratio of 1,000,000:1. A 12-bit resolution (up from 8-bit) precisely controls all of this.

The Samsung Odyssey Neo G9 has a refresh rate of 240 Hz with a 1 ms response time (gray to gray). As far as the I/O is concerned, It has 1 DisplayPort 1.4 input with Adaptive Sync and an HDMI 2.1 VRR input which is compatible with both Nvidia G-Sync and AMD FreeSync Premium Pro. Two USB ports and a headphone jack are also present.

As it is a gaming monitor, it comes with RGB lighting too. The Infinity Core Lightning+ system offers 52 colors with 5 lighting effects. The lighting effects can be customized through the new CoreSync feature.
