AMD Officially Announces the Radeon RX 500 Series

Well we've been talking about it for the past few weeks and now it is finally here! AMD today announced the Radeon RX 500 Series graphics cards. These new cards are based on "refined" variants of the "Polaris" family of GPUs, which powered the RX 400 series cards. These refinements include manufacturing-level enhancements that enabled high clock speeds, lower power draw, and new software features.

AMD “Polaris 12” Found In Linux Drivers

It looks like NVIDIA is working on a third GPU that will be based on its current "Polaris" architecture, which is Polaris 12. Looking into the code of AMDGPU DRM kernel driver, PCI-IDs 0x6980, 0x6981, 0x6985, 0x6986, 0x6987, and 0x699F, were pointing to a descriptor "Polaris 12." There are not other details known at this time.

Gigabyte Radeon RX 480 G1 Gaming 8GB Graphics Card Review

Today we will be taking a look at Gigabyte's Radeon RX 480 G1 Gaming 8GB graphics card. Of course AMD's Radeon RX 480 8GB is targeted towards gamers who want to play games at 1080p (1920 x 1080) and 1440p (2560 x 1440) resolutions. The Radeon RX 480 is based off AMD's Polaris 10 14nm GPU with 2304 stream processors, 144 TMUs, and 32 ROPs. The card directly competes with NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1060. Gigabyte's G1 Gaming version of the card is slightly overclocked with a boost clock up to 1290 MHz (compared to 1266 MHz), features Gigabyte's WindForce 2X cooling system which is made up of a dual-fan cooler with three copper heatpipes that make direct contact with the GPU, and even has some RGB lighting. AMD Says Vega Not Before 2017

A leaked presentation meant for investors, AMD has stated that they expect to launch the "Vega" GPU architecture no sooner than 2017. AMD does plan to get Vega out within the first half of 2017. What is interesting about this presentation is that AMD is not planning on making larger GPUs on its existing "Polaris" architecture. So the biggest product will be the $249 Radeon RX 480.

Microsoft’s New XBOX Scorpio To Be Powered By “Polaris” and “Zen”

Microsoft has just announced their new XBOX "Scorpio" 4K Ultra HD game console. This new console will be powered by a custom-designed SoC by AMD. This SoC will combine a GPU based on the "Polaris" architecture and a CPU based on the "Zen" microarchitecture. This is quite significant as it is a departure from using 8 smaller "Jaguar" cores and replaces them with stronger "Zen" ones. This chip could be built on the 14nm process.
