WD Black SN850X Overview
We received the non-heatsink version of the drive, so we have your typical M.2 2280 (80 mm) drive. The drive has a black PCB with a black sticker on the main side. The sticker gives you your model number, serial number, capacity, and other relevant information. For the 2TB version of the drive the price difference between non-heatsink and heatsink versions is $20.
Flipping the drive over you can see that we have a single-sided drive, which makes this drive great for thin and light devices.
Removing the sticker on the main side of the drive we can get a better look at the components. Unlike other drives there is no “warranty void if removed” notice on the sticker. We have our controller at the end of the drive, a smaller cache chip, and two NAND chips. The controller says SanDisk on it and is an 8-channel controller. The DDR4 DRAM chip is from Micron and is 2GB. Finally we come to the NAND which is BiCS5 3D TLC NAND, each flash chip is 1TB.
