Western Digital My Book 3.0 1TB USB 3.0 External Hard Drive Review

We will be testing this drive out on our Intel X58 test system.  Here are some quick specs…

Processor: Intel i7-965 Extreme
Motherboard: Gigabyte G1 Assassin
Memory: 6GB Crucial Ballistix
Operating System: Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit

We will be running the following 4 hard drive benchmarking programs to test the drive.

HDTune Pro (download)
ATTO Disk Benchmark (download)
CrystalDiskMark (download)
Sandra Physical Disks Benchmark (download)

We will be doing 3 separate tests, first we will be connecting the drive to the built-in USB 3.0 connections on our motherboard, then using the included the USB 3.0 PCI-E card and then finally good old USB 2.0.

HDTune Pro is one of the most popular hard drive software suites available. It has many different benchmarks and tests built into it.  Keep in mind it is a single-threaded application though.  We ran both the read and write benchmarks.

Next up we have ATTO Disk Benchmark that measures transfer rates across specific lengths.

CrystalDiskMark is our next test and ran the sequential read / write test.

Sandra Physical Disks benchmark is built into SiSoftware’s Sandra software suite. It tests drive performance and gives you a drive score, we ran both the read and write tests.
