AMD has unveiled its Radeon RX 7800M mobile GPU, which includes 60 Compute Units built on the RDNA 3 “Navi 32” architecture. This GPU is part of AMD’s latest RDNA 3 series, designed for high-performance gaming laptops and devices like the OneXGPU 2, an external GPU set to launch in stores next month. While no specific laptops featuring the RX 7800M have been announced yet, it’s expected to become more widely available compared to the RX 7900M and the mid-range 7600/7700(M/S) models, which have seen limited distribution.

The AMD Radeon RX 7800M is built on the 5nm Navi 32 GPU architecture, utilizing RDNA 3 technology. It features 30 WGPs (Work Group Processors) and 60 Compute Units, resulting in 3840 stream processors, with a total of 28.1 billion transistors. The GPU is equipped with 96 ROPs (Render Output Units) and boasts a maximum texture fill rate of 560.4 GT/s. It offers a peak performance of 35.87 TFLOPs for FP32 and 71.73 TFLOPs for FP16 operations.

This core count matches that of the AMD Radeon RX 7800 XT and the recently announced Sony PlayStation 5 Pro console. While the RX 7800 XT also uses the Navi 32 chip, the PS5 Pro is expected to leverage enhancements from the upcoming RDNA 4 architecture. The RX 7800M has a maximum game clock speed of 2145 MHz, which is lower than the 2430 MHz of the RX 7800 XT, mainly due to its lower power consumption (TDP).

The AMD Radeon RX 7800M GPU has a TDP of 180W, which is 46% lower than the 263W TDP of the RX 7800 XT. This reduction in power consumption contributes to a 12% lower clock speed, likely resulting in slightly reduced performance.

Another key difference is the memory setup. The RX 7800M comes with 12 GB of VRAM, compared to 16 GB on the RX 7800 XT. The memory on the 7800M runs at 18 Gbps, slower than the 19.5 Gbps on the 7800 XT. Additionally, the RX 7800M uses a 192-bit bus interface, limiting its memory bandwidth to 432 GB/s, whereas the 7800 XT reaches 624 GB/s. For reference, the Sony PS5 Pro, with its 18 Gbps memory, has a memory bandwidth of 576 GB/s, slightly lower than the RX 7800 XT.

The AMD Radeon RX 7800M GPU includes 48 MB of Infinity Cache across three MCDs (Memory Cache Dies), compared to the RX 7800 XT’s 64 MB across four MCDs on the Navi 32 silicon. This reduction in cache size is likely to position the 7800M’s performance closer to that of the RX 7700 XT than the 7800 XT.

According to early benchmarks from One-Netbook, the Radeon RX 7800M outperforms NVIDIA’s GeForce RTX 4070 by 28%, giving it a solid performance advantage. However, NVIDIA’s higher-end models, such as the RTX 4080 and RTX 4090, still offer superior performance and are widely available in a variety of laptops and platforms, unlike AMD’s more limited Radeon mobile GPU lineup.

The AMD Radeon RX 7800M is expected to run AAA games at maximum settings with 1080p resolution, delivering frame rates above 60 FPS. However, it’s unclear if this new Radeon GPU will face the same challenges as the rest of the RX 7000M series, which has struggled to gain traction, or if it will emerge as a strong competitor in the high-end mobile GPU market, where more competition from AMD is greatly needed.
