Crucial P5 Plus Gen4 NVMe Solid State Drive Review

Final Thoughts

At the end of the day I think that the Crucial P5 Plus is a solid drive for just about anyone. It is not breaking any records in terms of maximum speeds, but its speeds are respectable and this drive is going to be a nice upgrade from a SATA-based SSD or even a Gen3 NVMe drive. The drive also would be perfect for those looking to expand the PlayStation 5 internal storage.

When it came to our testing this drive pretty much was right in the middle of the pack of our Gen4 NVMe drives. Using CrystalDiskMark we saw speeds of 6761.58 MB/s read and 5012.17 MB/s write. In ATTO Disk Benchmark we saw speeds of 5690 MB/s read and 4680 MB/s write. These speeds were very close to the advertised speeds of 6600 MB/s read and 5000 MB/s write.

I do have to mention that this drive will thermally throttle if you are not cooling it. The drive does not ship with a heatsink, so it is up to you to cool it. Pretty much any motherboard that supports Gen4 drives will have adequate heatsinks and since the drive is single-sided all of the heat is going to be coming from one side.

Right now the 1TB version of the P5 Plus is selling at my favorite online retailer for $149.99, which is a very good price for what you are getting. Not to mention that Crucial does back the drive up with a 5-year warranty. Overall ThinkComputers gives the Crucial P5 Plus a 9 out of 10 score!
