Overclocking on Haswell processors remains the same with Devil’s Canyon as you are able to easily overclock the processor separately from the rest of your hardware. The Core i7-4790K is already clocked quite high at 4.0GHz, but let’s see how far we can push it.
After a short while I was able to bring the i7-4790K up to 4.6 GHz, which is about an 11% overclock. While I was able to get the system to boot all the way up to 4.9 GHz it was not stable at all.
4.6 GHz is actually the same overclock we normally see on the i7-4770K with this same setup. Even using a 240 mm all-in-one liquid CPU cooler the load temperatures running the i7-4790K at 4.6 GHz were around 80C. So it does not look like you are going to be able to be running this chip at 5 GHz on air!
