Kingston Fury Renegade Gen4 Solid State Drive Review

Final Thoughts

It has been a while since I’ve taken a look at a solid state drive from Kingston and I have to say the Fury Renegade is a very solid product. It has the look and feel of a gamer-focused product and the performance to back it up! Talking about performance this was actually the fastest Gen4 drive we’ve tested in terms of writes, getting 6.9 GB/s is CrystalDiskMark and 6.4 GB/s in ATTO Disk Benchmark. These scores were extremely impressive. I was a bit disappointed that our read speeds did not get up to the advertised speeds of 7300 MB/s, but only reached about 7000 MB/s. That put it sort of in the middle of the pack in terms of second generation Gen4 drives. Even so, that type of speed is incredibly fast!

Kingston has adopted what most companies have been doing with Gen4 drives is offering it with or without a heatsink. We of course had the heatsink version and I think Kingston did a really good job here. Phison’s E18 controller is known for getting quite hot, but in our testing we couldn’t get the drive the throttle once. On top of that the heatsink is quite attractive and is going to look great installed on your motherboard. Having the heatsink means this drive is also compatible with PlayStation 5. The price between a heatsink and non-heatsink version is only $5, which is the lowest cost difference we’ve seen.

I think that if you are looking for a Gen4 drive in 2023 this one should be at the top of your list. Right now you can pick up this drive (2TB w/ heatsink) at our favorite online retailer for $194.99 and the 1TB version will run you $104.99. Overall ThinkComputers gives the Kingston Fury Renegade Gen4 Solid State Drive a 9 out of 10 score and our Recommended Award!
