Kingston Wi-Drive 16GB Review

Final Thoughts
I really cannot believe that there are not other devices like this out there.  With Apple products you are really limited when it comes to space and even 64GB may not be enough will all of the apps and games out there.  The Wi-Drive from Kingston makes it extremely easy to add extra storage to your Apple device.

One of the things that I really liked about the Wi-Drive is that you are able to connect it to an available wireless network so you can still use the Internet and access content on your drive at the same time.  This also means that anyone that is connected to your network is able to access the drive as well.  If you want the drive to be completely secure you can just let it be its own access point and set a key to protect you data.

Currently Kingston is only offering a Wi-Drive app on the Apple App Store.  No word yet on if there will be an Android or Windows Phone app available in the future.  I would assume if you did want to use the Wi-Drive for these other devices you could by using the browser and connecting to the Wi-Drive’s IP address.

The Wi-Drive will play any type of media that can be played or viewed on the iPhone or any iOS device.  I did not see any lag during any of the videos we watched.  I watched quite a few 720p videos which were over 300MB and they streamed to my iPhone just fine.

The only thing I really see missing is being able to transfer files to and from the Wi-Drive from your iOS device.  Maybe we will see that function in a future version of the Wi-Drive app.  Right now the 16GB Wi-Drive is selling for $54.99 at my favorite online retailer, whereas the 32GB version is $89.99.  This makes the devices quite expensive for the capacity, when you can get a 16GB microSD card for under $20.  Keep in mind though you can stream content to multiple iOS devices with this drive.

Overall I am very impressed with this product and as I said I am surprised that there are not more drives like this out there.  ThinkComputers gives the Kingston Wi-Drive a 9 out of 10 score.
