Lucid Thunderbolt Graphics Technology Shown at IDF

In a private briefing on the eve of Intel’s Developers Forum, Lucid allowed the guys from Laptop Mag to go hands-on with a prototype Thunderbolt graphics card / enclosure. They are targeting this device towards laptop and ultrabook users. It will allow you to install a discrete graphics card of your choice in the enclosure and use it via the 10GB/s Thunderbolt connection on your ultrabook or laptop. Check out the video below to see it in action.

We actually saw a few of these prototype enclosures this past year at CES. They provide a great performance boost for users who wants to be able to play games while they are at home, but still want a thin and light ultrabook for daily use and travel. Now that Thunderbolt is becoming more of a standard I really hope to see these sort of devices catch on. No word yet on the release date or how much the enclose will cost.
