Final Thoughts on the Samsung 990 Evo Plus
If you are looking to upgrade your storage from a traditional 2.5-inch solid state drive or wants to add a second or third M.2 drive the Samsung 990 Evo Plus is going to be a very solid choice. Unlike many of their competitors in the space Samsung did not try and make the fastest drive out there, but rather one that would be extremely reliable, would not overheat, and would provide adequate performance for every-day tasks.
Talking about performance the 2TB version that we took a look at today is rated for sequential speeds of 7250 MB/s read and 6300 MB/s write. While we did see performance really close to that, in some of our tests we saw performance much lower than that. We ran these tests multiple times and still had the same result. I am not sure what the issue could have been, but we would expect you to see real-world performance very close to the advertised speeds of the drive. Again, not the fastest out there, but for sure an upgrade over a 2.5-inch drive.
Samsung really did a lot to focus on efficiency with this drive. This drive has 73% higher power efficiency than its predecessor and of course better performance as well. This means the drive is not going to get super hot and thermally throttle. This along with the drive being single-sided really makes it a great choice for thin and light devices or gaming handhelds that support a M.2 2280 drive.
You can get this drive in 1TB, 2TB, and 4TB capacities. The 2TB version that we took a look at today is selling at our favorite online retailer for $149.99. Overall ThinkComputers gives the Samsung 990 Evo Plus a 9 out of 10 score.

Pros:
– Solid overall performance
– Does not overheat or thermally throttle
– Single-sided
– All in-house design by Samsung
Cons:
– Not the fastest drive out there
