Final Thoughts
Scythe has always put out great CPU coolers and the Mugen 5 is no different. When it comes to performance it sits within the top 5 of the 14 CPU coolers in our test group. This is very impressive! So if you are looking to run a 24/7 overclock or if you have a HEDT processor this is definitely a CPU cooler to consider. Remember you can even add a second fan if you want for more performance.
On top of its performance the 120 mm Kaze Flex PWM fan is very quiet, especially if you have it inside of a closed off case like we did.
Installation of the Mugen 5 is pretty simple and can be done inside your case without having to remove any hardware. We are becoming pretty accustomed to Scythe’s mounting system and while not the best out there it is definitely not the worst. The instructions are easy to follow and we really did not run into any issues at all.
Right now the Mugen 5 is selling at our favorite online retailer for $46.99, which is a great price considering the performance! Overall ThinkComputers gives the Scythe Mugen 5 CPU Cooler a 9 out of 10 score and our Good Value Award!

Pros:
– Great performance
– Easy to install
– Quiet operation
– Price
Cons:
– Our sample had large machining marks on the base

Does this support TR4 socket for the new Ryzen Threadripper processors from AMD?
This is a great cooler as you have found. I will only note that on the Asus Crosshair Hero VI (designed for Ryzen) the Mugen 5 cooler fins have an approx 1mm interference with any card you put in the nearest PCIe (x1) slot. It’s enough to push the card a little sideways, and will require a very thin piece of plastic to be wedged between the card and the fins to prevent electrical shorts.
I would still buy the cooler again, because this isn’t a big deal, but be aware of the issue.
