Final Thoughts on the SK hynix Platinum P51 Gen5 Solid State Drive
Each time I get a SK hynix product in to review I am always expecting it to be great and the Platinum P51 is no exception to that! One of the major factors to SK hynix products being so consistent time and time again is that SK hynix makes everything on the drive from the controller, to the NAND, and even the cache chip. This allows them to fully optimize the drive as well as not have to deal with supply chain or sourcing issues.
When it comes to performance this drive was did quite well. In CrystalDiskMark we saw sequential speeds of 14692.38 MB/s read and 12838.59 MB/s write. In ATTO Disk Benchmark speeds were 13.65 GB/s read and 11.79 GB/s write. We also saw really great performance in sustained writes as we were able to write about 90% of the drive before we saw a performance hit, which is really impressive.
Using the M.2 heatsink on our motherboard we did not run into any thermal throttling issues and temperatures were in check. It is unclear if SK hynix will come out with a heatsink version of this drive, but it is nice to know your motherboard’s M.2 heatsinks will suffice.
Right now you can pick up the 2TB drive that we took a look at today for $229.99, which we feel is a fair price. The 1TB drive is $159.99. Sadly there is not a 4TB or 8TB version of the drive available. Overall ThinkComputers gives the SK hynix Platinum P51 Gen5 Solid State Drive a 9 out of 10 score and our Recommended Award!

Pros:
– Great performance
– All parts made by SK hynix
– No thermal throttling issues
– Can write about 90% of the drive before you see a performance hit
Cons:
– No 4TB or 8TB versions
