TRENDnet TEW-687GA 450Mbps Wireless N Gaming Adapter Review

The Admin Panel
When you first log into the TEW-687GA you’ll be greeted with the following status screen. It includes firmware version, uptime, IP of the device and link status.

There’s also other options you can mess around with such as setting a static IP or using DHCP, site survey, station statistics, manual WPS, profile list, and QoS. Most of the screens are pretty self explanatory, but I’ll provide a quick rundown.

The TEW-687GA is factory defaulted to a static IP of 192.168.10.110. This IP doesn’t play nice with most networks since they usually end in *.1.xxx. So after manually setting an IP on your computer, you can connect to the TEW-687GA and set it to DHCP. Also, this is a device you’ll probably want to add a static DHCP entry for to avoid future confusion of where the device lives.

If you really want to tweak your wireless N settings, TRENDnet has included an advanced tab. Here you can set the wireless mode (B/G/N or N only), HT mode, channel bandwidth, MCS, guard interval, and MPDU aggregation.

Site survey just shows all of the wireless networks in your area, regardless if the AP is broadcasting an SSID or not. Station statistics are pretty cool. It’s a complete rundown of successful, unsuccessful and repeat transmissions. Manual WPS allows you to enter a pin number to pair two devices instead of leaving it up to the magic of automatic configuration. Not many people may dive into the QoS settings, but it’s definitely nice that TRENDnet has included them on the TEW-687GA.
