A US retailer has listed the Dev Kit with Qualcomm’s latest PC processor, expecting it to be available on August 23. This date marks when the retailer will begin fulfilling preorders, not the official release of the first Mini-PC with the Snapdragon X Series. It appears preorders have only recently become available.
The Snapdragon Dev Kit is a compact Windows PC, sized at 20×17 cm, which makes it slightly larger than many Mini-PCs available. This device is not a standard retail product but rather a specialized kit for developers to create and test software for Windows on ARM.
One of the kit’s most significant advantages is its inclusion of the Snapdragon X Elite processor, codenamed “X1E-00-IDE.” This powerful processor offers 12 cores with speeds reaching up to 4.3 GHz (in dual-core boost mode) and features an Adreno GPU with a performance capability of up to 4.6 TFLOPs.
The device comes with 32GB of LPDDR5x memory and 512GB of NVMe storage, though the speed details for both are not provided. It supports WiFi 7 and Bluetooth 5.4. Users will also find a variety of ports, including an Ethernet port (speed not specified), three USB Type-C ports, two USB Type-A ports, an HDMI port, and audio jack connectors.
The kit is priced at $899, in line with Qualcomm’s earlier promise. While this price is high and may not be practical for everyday users, developers focused on creating ARM-native apps for Windows might see it as a worthwhile investment. However, Snapdragon X Elite series laptops seem to be struggling with popularity, and pricing them over $1,000 hasn’t helped. Qualcomm might consider providing these kits for free to ARM developers.
