WD My Passport 5TB Portable Hard Drive Review

Performance Testing

We connected the drive to our X299 desktop PC for testing. This PC of course has USB 3.2 gen 1 ports on it. Our first test is CrystalDiskMark, which will give us a good idea of read and write speeds of the drive.

As you can see we have read a write speeds of 128.2 MB/s and 124.1 MB/s respectively, which is what you should expect from a portable hard drive like this. Next up is the USB Flash Benchmark, which will transfer various different file sizes to the drive and record the transfer speeds.

Here we can see the drive performs quite well and actually when the file sizes are 256 – 64KB the drive actually reads at over 200 MB/s. Finally we run the AJA System test. It tests different types of video formats and gives you throughput results for the drive. Our configuration was 4K RED HD footage, 1 GB test file size, and the 8bit YUV codec.

Again we can see pretty good results at over 100 MB/s for both the read and write.
