ADATA SD700 Portable Solid State Drive Review

ADATA SD700 Portable Solid State Drive Overview
The ADATA SD700 does not have your typical portable hard drive design, instead it is more of a square. This is of course made possible because this is a solid state drive, not a traditional hard drive. The smaller square shape makes this drive totally pocketable and easy to take with you places. Inside this drive you’ll find Silicon Motion’s SM2258 controller teamed with 3D TLC NAND flash chips from IMFT.

The main part of the drive is made of metal and is very durable. On the top of the drive you have the ADATA logo and a small power / activity LED. The drive is extremely light at only 100g or 3.5oz so it is not going to add much weight to you bag at all.

You can see the rubber around the drive itself. This not only goes around the drive, but also goes into the drive to ensure a hermetic seal and shock resistance. The SD700 is designed and tested to IEC IP68 standards which means it is completely dust proof and can survive in 1.5 meters of water for 60 minutes. The drive also meets the U.S. Army’s MIL-STD-810G516.6 shock and drop resistance standard. The SD700 is one of the first 3D NAND-based drives to meet both of those specifications.

Towards the front of the drive you’ll see a little cover that can be opened to reveal the single connection on this drive, which is a USB 3.0 micro-B. The micro-B connection has been used for a long time in portable USB 3.0 drives, but it would have been nice to have seen a type-C connector like we saw on the Samsung Portable SSD T3.
