This potential discovery hints at the forthcoming Threadripper PRO series, which is based on the Zen4 architecture. AMD has held off on releasing these CPUs for nearly a year since their initial Zen4 CPU launch for consumers.
The leaked details reveal a processor using the SP6 socket. While it doesn’t carry the Threadripper branding, the seller in the Chinese black market is labeling it as such. The accompanying image in the listing specifies an AMD OPN core of 100-00000454, purportedly belonging to the upcoming Threadripper PRO 7985WX SKU. This particular model is rumored to feature an impressive 64 cores and 128 threads, a configuration closely resembling the current flagship, the 5995WX.
This leak appears to support earlier speculations that this CPU will come with a default TDP of 350W, representing a significant bump from the Zen3-based 280W series. Furthermore, it seems AMD is gearing up to provide processors with even higher power, potentially reaching up to 96 cores and 192 threads. Additionally, there have been reports of clock speeds potentially hitting as high as 5.1 GHz.
The seller claims the CPU is functional and shows signs of previous use. However, a valid concern arises regarding whether this CPU can be effectively integrated into any data-center platform utilizing the same SP6 socket. The compatibility in this situation seems uncertain. Otherwise, a potential buyer might acquire a CPU that lacks compatibility with a suitable motherboard.
Expectations are high for AMD’s upcoming release of the TRX50 chipset and platform, designed to support the upcoming Threadripper 7000 series. This launch is anticipated to take place before the end of the year. The new platform will offer compatibility with DDR5 memory and PCIe Gen5.
