ASUS SBC-06D1S-U External Slim Blu-ray Combo Drive Review

Testing
After doing some research on our last optical drive review we have decided to use Opti Drive Control to test the speeds of the drive.  Before we get into testing what system will we be using for testing?  Well since this is a slim external drive I went ahead and tested it on my laptop which is a Lenovo ThinkPad Edge 13-inch, which has an Intel ULV U7300 1.30 GHz Processor and 4GB of DDR3 memory.

Our first test will be a Blu-ray movie disc The Matrix. This is a dual-layer 37.11GB commercially pressed disc.

As you can see from our results the drive had an average read speed of 4.13x, which exceeds the 4x advertised speed for BD movie files.

Our next test is a DVD-ROM game disc Crysis Warhead. It is a 7.16 commercially pressed disc.

The drive peaked right under the 8x advertised speed.  It had an average read time of 5.59x and started and ended right around 3x.  The CPU usage was 0% which is very important when playing PC games.

We also watched quite a few DVD’s and Blu-ray movies with the SBC-06D1S-U.  While watching the Matrix Blu-ray movie I watched the CPU utilization on my laptop and it averaged around 60% which is not that bad at all.  Also the drive was very quiet, if you have headphones on you cannot hear it at all.
