Corsair Scimitar RGB Elite MOBA/MMO Gaming Mouse Review

Usage

In our time with the Corsair Scimitar RGB Elite, we have used it as our main mouse in both daily computing work, as well as while gaming. In both environments, the overall shape and feel of the Scimitar was quite comfortable. Though slightly large in our hand, this is definitely not the largest mouse we have ever used, nor is it the smallest. The curved and contoured body of the Scimitar RGB Elite lends itself towards palm grip use, though fingertip and claw grips were comfortable as well.

The build quality is exactly what we have come to expect from our Corsair peripherals; solid but not clunky, lightweight but not flimsy. The soft-touch plastic body felt good to our hand, and the texturized rubber on the right side of the mouse provided good grip without any sticky feeling or rough discomfort. Using the included hex wrench to assist with adjusting the placement of the key slider is a pretty easy process, though it may take a few tries. We found that loosening the screw to allow the panel to move to where we wanted it, then squeezing the mouse tightly to keep the panel in place worked best for us, and allowed us then to to lift the mouse and tighten the screw with our other hand. We are really glad that Corsair designed the Scimitar RGB Elite to have this sliding panel, as when we had the panel at its forward-most position, we had trouble accessing all 12 buttons. When centered, things were better, but we ultimately ended up with the panel slid all the way to the back of the mouse, which placed all of the buttons within easy reach of our thumb.

As the Scimitar RGB Elite is designed with MOBA and MMO games in mind, we spent most of our gaming testing time in World of Warcraft Classic. As we want to take full advantage of the 12 programmable side buttons on the Scimitar RGB Elite, we first needed to set a custom function for each button. We chose to use the “Alt” button as a modifier, and then used numbers “1” through “0” and the “-” and “=” keys to create macros. Once in WoW Classic, we then set our key bindings by simply pressing one of the 12 buttons on our mouse, which then sent our “Alt + number” to the game. Easy enough! Now that the easy part was over, it was time to get to gaming. We aren’t going to lie – it takes some time to get used to the feel of a new mouse, no matter what the type, and getting used to the 12 buttons on the side of the Scimitar RGB Elite took us even longer to adjust to. Buttons 1 and 4 are very easy to acclimate to, and the same can be said for 2 and 5. The rest of the buttons however, definitely took us a lot longer to become more comfortable with finding and using, and we would definitely recommend taking quite a bit of time to adjust to this layout before heading into a raid. We definitely found ourselves misclicking or taking a long time to find a particular button to press, though it should be noted that this is no fault of the mouse itself, this is simply a skill to learn that will get better with time.

Using the Scimitar RGB Elite in an FPS title like Apex Legends was a bit of a learning curve as well, but again, this just took a bit of time to feel comfortable with all of the additional buttons available to our thumb. Instead of having access to just two thumb buttons for abilities like we have on our daily-use mouse, the Corsair Harpoon RGB, the Scimitar RGB Elite allowed us to take advantage of additional in-game abilities like configuring buttons for healing and shield repair, as well as grenades. Again, this brought abilities that were previously accessed via keyboard keys or on-screen menus to our thumb for quick and easy access.

Finally, the Scimitar RGB Elite is stout, weighing in at 122g. This can be either a plus or a minus, depending on your personal preference, and with no adjustable weight system, the Scimitar is catered to those that favor a heavier device.

Final Thoughts

Touted as a gaming mouse designed for MOBA and MMO games, the updated Scimitar RGB Elite offers a plethora of easily-accessible, customizable buttons, in addition to a high-DPI optical sensor. While the high sensitivity sensor definitely lends itself towards MOBA titles, having the ability to adjust sensitivity in 1 DPI increments can be seen as a great feature no matter the use.

The palm grip design of the mouse body lends itself towards long gaming sessions, as your hand can rest comfortably on the mouse body. Adding to the comfort of the mouse is the ability to adjust the placement of the 12-button key slider to fit your hand’s needs. The soft-touch plastic surface that covers most of the mouse body is quite comfortable, and the textured rubber grip found on the right side of the body provides plenty of additional grip while still being pleasing to the touch.
