Fractal Design North Case Review

A Look Inside

In the past we’ve praised Fractal Design for their side panel designs, but here each side panel is simply held into place by captive thumbscrews on the rear of the case.

When you remove the main side panel you are still left with that 20% section towards the front of the case. This is here so you can install the optional fan bracket that supports two 120 / 140mm fans. This bracket can actually be installed in three (high, mid, low) positions on the side panel. You’ll also find a captive thumbscrew on the smaller panel which unlocks it to be removed. Inside the case we have the familiar 2 compartment design with a power supply cover separating the two compartments.

The main compartment is of course going to house your motherboard and this case will support mini-ITX, micro-ATX, and ATX motherboards. There are two large cable routing holes to the right of the motherboard tray which do have rubber inserts installed. At the rear of the case we can see our expansion slot covers do have thumbscrews and it is also worth noting that the internal section of the case is a nice gunmetal color.

The power supply cover extends almost the full length of the case, but there is a cut-out towards the front if you happened to want to do watercooling in this case. There are also two cable routing holes on the cover as well as ventilation for your power supply.

Taking the opposite side panel off the case we have a pretty simple design. The first thing that does stand out is a small fan hub at the top center of the case. This hub only supports a total of 4 fans.

Below the CPU cutout in the motherboard tray is a removable SSD bracket that supports two 2.5-inch SSDs. Towards the front of the case there are three included velcro straps to keep your cables organized and there are plenty of tie-down points for the included zip ties.

Moving down to the bottom compartment of the case we have our power supply mount and you’ll find two removable hard drive trays. These trays will support both a 2.5-inch and 3.5-inch hard drive, so in total this case supports six hard drives out of the box. If you have a longer power supply there are actually different mounting points for these trays, and even one that will mount the drive to the top of the compartment.
