iMovR Lander Desk Review

Lander Desk Usage & Overview
Before we get our hardware on the desk I wanted to talk about the 3D-laminated tabletop. All iMovR tabletops are ergo-contoured on precision CNC (Computer Numerical Control) equipment and then hermetically sealed with Surf(x) 3D lamination, providing superior performance to conventional high-pressure laminated, powder-coated, and even hardwood tops you’ll find on other desks.

So the edges and corners of the tabletops are precision-contoured to create an elegant and ergonomic “comfort edge,” while also rounding off those sharp corners. The chosen color or woodgrain image is then thermofused to the core using an advanced 3D lamination process that covers every exposed surface of the wood. This 3D lamination method is not only more elegant in appearance compared to standard lamination, it better protects the tabletop from moisture damage and warping, and guarantees a higher level of durability. So there are absolutely no edges on this desk that will wear over time or say cut you.

We are currently using the Lander Desk at our downtown office, which is a shared office space. So I have a 17-inch laptop there as well as a 24-inch external monitor. The monitor is mounted on a monitor arm, which was quite easy to install on the desk. All of the cables easily route through the two pre-cut holes in the desk, but there is not any real cable-management on the bottom of the desk.

If you are looking to do cable management on this desk I would highly recommend Ikea’s SIGNUM. I’ve tried making my own custom cable management on other desks, but the SIGNUM is only $14.99 and well worth it. It was easily installed on this desk.

As I mentioned we ordered the Lander Desk with SteadyType so we have the keyboard tray built into the desk itself. First off this should fit some of the largest keyboards out there. We are currently using it with the Logitech Craft, which is a full-sized keyboard. This is not just simply a tray for your keyboard, it can be adjusted to any angle up to 85 degrees, which allows for a truly neutral arm / wrist position while standing. iMovR also lets us know that SteadyType trays are far more stable than traditional trays, leading to significantly less monitor shaking. I have the tray at a normal position when I am sitting, but when I am standing I have it angled down and it is quite comfortable. There are also adjustable pegs on the tray to “lock in” your keyboard.

Operating the desk is pretty easy, you can just press up or down on the controller to move the desk. A small LCD screen will let you know the height that you are at.

The controller has a lot of different functions built into it, but one thing that this desk has that others do not is an app that lets you control it. The App is called Desk Control and can easily be found on the iOS or Google Play stores. This app is not made by iMovR, but LINAK who make the controller. The App controls your desk via a Bluetooth connection and is quite easy to setup the first time. The first thing that I did was set my favorite positions for sitting and standing. Once you do that they are saved in the app and you can easily go from sitting to standing quickly.

The whole idea of a standing desk is to keep you more healthy so the app has some goals built into it such as standing for 5 minutes every 55 minutes, standing for 10 minutes every 50 minutes, and standing for 15 minutes every 45 minutes. You can change and adjust these goals, but they give you a reminder on the app and on the controller so you stand up throughout the day.

iMovR also sent along one of their EcoLast Premium Standing Mats and in general if you are using a sit-stand desk I would highly recommend getting some type of standing mat. I’ve actually used a few different standing mats so the big difference I noticed with the EcoLast Premium mat is that is was much more stiff than other mats. A lot of standing mats are made of foam, gel, or rubber, which can be comfortable at first, but for prolonged standing sessions they really are not. The EcoLast Premium mat is made of 3/4”-thick, 100% polyurethane, which as I said is stiffer, but gives you better support over time.
