Millennials and Their Love Affair with Gaming

Millennials love to play computer games, so much so that there’s barely a distinction between the term millennial and gamer – the two seem to go hand in hand. The last 20 years has seen gaming go from strength to strength, becoming a billion dollar industry that caters to a wide range of players that come from all walks of life. The advancements in technology have played a huge part in making gaming so popular and games designers are quick to utilise any new tech that comes on the market. We’ve also seen improved storylines, better graphics and a sharper focus placed on multi-player interaction.

Multiplayer games like League of Legends, Fortnite and DOTA are staples of the millennial gaming diet. These games have become so popular that they now have huge tournaments where teams come together to compete and showcase their skills. A recent poll of 13 to 36 years olds to determine their favourite video games revealed that Call of Duty and The Sims are the favourites by far. In fact, The Sims just pipped Call of Duty to the post. It turns out that gamers are turned on by the fact that they can be whoever they want to be when they enter the world of Sims. The Sims allows you to build your very own utopia and escape the stresses and strains of everyday life. This result points to escapism as being one of the main reasons that millennials turn to video games in the first place – the generation before them tended to rely on partying to do the same thing.

Call of Duty is the quintessential first-person shooter game. It has everything a gamer could want in a game – action, adventure and a historical backdrop (it’s set in WWII). The game appeals more to men than it does to women, with many men saying that Call of Duty was their first love. The game has been around a long time now, so this is a game that many millennials grew up and have remained loyal too.

The Male/Female Divide

FIFA, Grand Theft Auto, Pokémon, Candy Crush and Super Mario Bros also made the top 10 list of favourite games. However, when the group of millennials were separated into male and female, the list saw some significant changes. It seems the guys aren’t so keen on Candy Crush and Pokémon and the girls snubbed FIFA and League of Legends. Grand Theft Auto appears on both lists, as does League of Zelda and Minecraft.

Reels of Fun

Millennials are not just playing video games; they’re also playing casino games. Online casinos have attracted a large share of the millennial pie, more so than their land-based counterparts. Slot games, in particular, are firm favourites. This is in part due to the partnerships that have formed between software developers and film/TV companies.
