Final Thoughts on the MSI DATAMAG 20Gbps
Since I’ve had my iPhone 15 Pro I’ve really wanted a device like this. If you want to record 4K 60 FPS video in Apple ProRes the only way to do it is with a portable solid state drive like this. I have a ton of portable solid state drives, but if I really wanted to use them with my iPhone I would have to try and hold them while recording or use some sort of case / cage that had a slot for a drive. The MSI DATAMAG 20Gbps solves that problem completely as it just attaches directly to the back of my phone! No more trying to hold a drive and record at the same time or taking forever to cage up my phone to shoot!
The new iPhone Pro’s (15 & 16) have a USB 3.2 gen 2 Type-C connection which is limited to 1000 MB/s and in our testing the drive performed quite close to that. If you connect the drive to your computer you are going to get even better performance as the drive is rated for 1600 MB/s read and 1500 MB/s write. Again in our testing we saw those speeds. But it is a bit odd that MSI is calling this drive “20Gbps” as it does not hit that speed.
The drive is very well built and is small enough to take with you anywhere. As I mentioned you’ll be able to pick it up in 1TB, 2TB, and 4TB options. Currently pricing is unknown. Overall ThinkComputers gives the MSI DATAMAG 20Gbps Magnetic Portable Solid State Drive a 9 out of 10 score.

Pros:
– Very well built
– Will max out the USB-C connection on your iPhone
– Small and compact
– Available in 1TB, 2TB, and 4TB capacities

Cons:
– Technically does not perform up to 20Gbps speeds
