NVIDIA Is Finally Shipping GeForce RTX 4090 Founders Edition With Updated Power Connector

NVIDIA seems to be working on updating their Founder Edition cards by introducing an enhanced power connector design. Although the exact implementation details remain undisclosed, it has come to light that NVIDIA has already incorporated this connector in their RTX 4070 and RTX 4070 Ti cards belonging to the RTX 40 series. However, it’s uncertain if this represents the complete utilization of the 12V-2×6 connector.

Despite NVIDIA not providing official confirmation of any alterations to the power connector, information about a new design surfaced through reports indicating the company’s ongoing development of a revised connector. One noteworthy aspect of the new design is the inclusion of shortened sense pins. By reducing the length of these pins, the GPU’s capacity to communicate and negotiate with the power supply for higher wattage is effectively eliminated unless the cable is fully inserted. This modification serves as a safeguard against instances where excessive power is directed through a partially connected cable.

According to recent reports, NVIDIA has integrated the new connector design into the RTX 4090 Founders Edition, making it the first desktop GPU of its generation to adopt the 12+4pin design. This slight modification aims to minimize the chances of the connector functioning improperly, such as when a cable is not properly connected, which could potentially result in melting or other complications.
