OCZ Trion 150 480GB Solid State Drive Review

Final Thoughts
OCZ definitely has a contender for an inexpensive solid state drive. Drives like these will make is very easy for people to upgrade their current systems with solid state drives. As a successor to the Trion 100 the Trion 150 is faster and comes in at a better price point, so OCZ definitely did a great job here.

Now this is a TLC-based solid state drive, so compared to MLC NAND you have slower write performance, lower IOPS, and less endurance. This has not stopped many drive manufacturers from coming out with TLC-based drives. OCZ has tried addressing some of these issues by having more NAND chips than expected and an on-board RAM cache chip. The drive does have a lower endurance than what you would see from an MLC-based drive, but 120TB of writes is quite good.

We did see good scores across the board with this drive, besides the write score in AIDA64. The drive actually had the best read score that we’ve seen in ATTO Disk Benchmark! If you are going to be upgrading from a normal hard drive you are definitely going to notice a difference with this drive. The drive is also compatible with OCZ’s SSD Toolbox software.

Because we have TLC NAND the drive comes with a 3-year warranty. This is OCZ’s ShieldPlus warranty which allows users to return a defective drive by just providing the serial number, no sales receipt is needed. Once it is determined that the user needs a new drive one is sent to them at no charge and in the box with the replacement drive they will find a pre-paid return label for the defective drive. This should put many people’s minds at ease when it comes to a warranty or RMA support.

Right now the 480GB version of the drive is selling for $117.49, which puts this drive at $0.24 per GB! If you are looking to upgrade a laptop or desktop or even just want a few low-cost solid state drives the Trion 150 from OCZ is a great choice. Overall ThinkComputers gives the OCZ Trion 150 480GB Solid State drive a 9 out of 10 score.
