Patriot has done a really good job on their Viper VP4100 drive. It is their first Gen4 NVMe solid state drive and they’ve teamed it with the worlds first Gen4 controller, the Phison PS5016-E16, and Toshiba 96-layer 3D TLC NAND. With that Patriot says this drive will give you read and write speeds of 5000 MB/s and 4400 MB/s respectively. In our testing the drive performed right up to its specification, which is very impressive.
Patriot has outfitted this drive with a more slim aluminum heatsink and it does a good job at keeping the drive nice and cool. We did not run into any overheating or thermal throttling issues. Since the heatsink is smaller than the one we saw on their VPN100 drive you shouldn’t run into any clearance issues with a graphics card or other parts of your motherboard.
Right now you can pick this drive up at our favorite online retailer for $209.99. That is a pretty fair price, although the 1TB version of the Samsung 980 Pro is only $20 more and is much faster, but your motherboard will need a M.2 heatsink or you’ll run into throttling issues.
Overall ThinkComputers gives the Patriot Viper VP4100 PCIe 4.0 NVMe Solid State Drive a 9 out of 10 score.
– Available in capacities up to 2TB
