Sabrent Rocket 1TB PCIe 4.0 M.2 Solid State Drive Review

Final Thoughts

So we have another contender in the PCI-Express 4.0 NVMe SSD market and a very good one at that. With PCI-Express 4.0 in its infancy many of these drives will have a similar design and we see that with this drive as it uses the same Phison PS5016-E16 controller and 96 layer Toshiba BiCS4 TLC NAND that the AORUS NVMe Gen4 SSD did. The only real difference between these drives is the cooling solution. The AORUS drive uses a full-on all copper heatsink, while this drive uses a larger aluminum heatsink with copper heatpipes. So from there it comes down to what cooler you like better.

It is worth mentioning that the Sabrent drive did perform better in write tests by about 200 MB/s. The drive did perform right up to its rated speeds of 5000 MB/s read and 4400 MB/s write, making it one of the fastest solid state drives we’ve ever tested and one of the fastest available for a mainstream platform.

Sabrent has really done a great job on their heatsink. We did not see the drive throttle at all and it kept the drive nice and cool. Also comparing to the AORUS drive the heatsink on the Sabrent drive was less hot to the touch, which makes sense as the AORUS drive uses an all-copper heatsink. You will have to make sure your motherboard has room for the heatsink as it is wider and taller than a normal M.2 drive. Also on the Sabrent website it did say that the heatsink was pre-installed, which was not the case. Sabrent does offer a version of the drive without a heatsink so the version with the heatsink should really come pre-installed as those who are buying it definitely want to make use of the heatsink.

Right now Sabrent is selling the 1TB version of this drive for $179.99 (with heatsink) and $169.98 (without the heatsink). Also for those who like the heatsink, they actually sell the standalone heatsink for $24.99. At this price and the performance we experienced we can definitely recommend this PCI-Express 4.0 solid state drive to anyone, Sabrent also backs the drive up with a 5-year warranty! Overall ThinkComputers gives the Sabrent Rocket 1TB PCIe 4.0 M.2 Solid State Drive a 9 out of 10 score and our Recommended Award!

– Awesome heatsink
– Great unboxing experience
