Ray Tracing & FSR 4 Performance on the Sapphire NITRO+ AMD Radeon RX 9060 XT

The Radeon RX 9070 features 112 AI accelerators, 56 RT accelerators. These are of course used for real-time ray tracing as well as FSR4. When it comes to real-time ray tracing we use the 3DMark Port Royal benchmark.

With the Radeon RX 9070 series AMD is introducing FSR4. AMD’s FSR4 (FidelityFX Super Resolution 4) is an upscaling technology that represents a significant advancement in AMD’s arsenal of graphics enhancement tools. FSR4 uses machine learning algorithms to intelligently upscale lower-resolution images to higher resolutions, allowing games to run at improved frame rates while maintaining excellent visual quality. The technology builds upon its predecessors by offering more refined edge reconstruction, reduced ghosting artifacts, and better preservation of fine details, even in motion-heavy scenes. FSR4 provides gamers with multiple quality modes to balance performance and visual fidelity according to their preferences, and unlike some competing technologies, it works across a wide range of GPU hardware, not just AMD’s own products. This cross-compatibility has made it particularly attractive to developers looking to implement a single upscaling solution that benefits the greatest number of players.

To test this we enable AMD FSR4 in the AMD driver software and then in Horizon Zero Dawn. We first run the game (at 4K) normally without FSR4, then with FSR4 (Performance Setting) without frame generation, and then finally with FSR4 (Performance Setting) with frame generation. You can see the nice bump in performance by enabling FSR4!
