Crucial is currently developing a cutting-edge storage solution based on the PCIe Gen5 standard. Unfortunately, the adoption of PCIe 5.0 technology has been much slower than many enthusiasts had anticipated. Although storage companies had promised to double transfer speeds compared to Gen4 storage, it will take several months, if not years, before we start seeing SSDs with these capabilities available in the market. Even after 16 months since the first desktop platform capable of supporting Gen5 was introduced, the availability of Gen5 storage remains very limited.
As there are no PCIe Gen5 graphics cards available at the moment, except for the Chinese MTT series, consumers are left with only one option: storage. Over the past two months, we’ve seen quite a few solutions released in the market, indicating that the Gen5 revolution has only just begun.
It seems that another brand is preparing to enter the competition for the fastest transfer speeds soon. Similar to other Gen5 SSDs, the Crucial T700 will be based on the Phison E26 controller and will come equipped with a heatsink. However, the heatsink on this SSD is considerably smaller, and it does not have a noisy fan like the one found on the Inland SSD. Therefore, if this storage device can achieve its advertised speeds without the need for active cooling, it would already be a significant victory.
LinusTechTips tweeted that he was given a sneak peek at the Crucial T700 storage, which achieved a sequential read speed of 12422 MB/s and a write speed of 11858 MB/s during the CrystalDiskMark software test. It is not clear which platform was used to test the storage, but it could have been either an Intel 600 or 700 series motherboard or an AMD 600 series motherboard. The latter provides complete support without compromising the speed of the main PCIe Gen5 slot for the GPU, which is unfortunately not the case with Intel.
