ASUS Lists AMD Ryzen AI 9 HX 170 “Strix Point” APU

ASUS asserts that their upcoming VivoBook S16 laptops, equipped with a 12-core AMD CPU, will introduce a completely fresh naming convention. In contrast to Lenovo’s approach with their T14 laptop, AMD’s forthcoming Strix Point APU series might adopt an entirely new naming structure.

AMD appears to be aligning its naming strategy with Intel’s. The Core Ultra 9 is poised to rival AMD’s Ryzen AI 9 HX processor, currently identified as the HX 170 SKU, boasting 12 cores and clock speeds of up to 5.1 GHz. This processor is expected to drive the soon-to-be-announced VivoBook S16 OLED laptop (M5606), likely making its debut at Computex next month.

These latest models represent an evolution from the AMD Ryzen 9 8945HS Processor-based system, providing a combined AI performance of 39 TOPS. ASUS indicates that the forthcoming AMD APUs will deliver up to 77 TOPS, largely attributed to the enhanced XDNA2 AI core and faster RDNA3.5 graphics. ASUS confirms that the NPU alone will deliver 45 TOPS.

The transition from Ryzen 9 nomenclature to Ryzen AI branding occurs shortly after Intel unveiled its Core Ultra branding. Both firms appear to be circling back to the 100 series. This shift also prompts inquiries about Ryzen 9000, alternatively referred to as desktop components, which have been acknowledged by companies such as Gigabyte.
