ASUS SBC-04D1S-U External Slim Blu-ray Combo Drive Review

SBC-04D1S-U Overview
The drive unit itself is just like the name states…slim. It is only 21mm thick, which is extremely small for an external drive. This drive looks almost exactly like the ASUS SDRW-08D1S-U drive we reviewed a little while ago, except the top of this drive, which has a design that actually lights up when the drive is in use.

On the front of the drive you have a large eject button and activity LED’s. Moving around back there is a single miniUSB connection. If you guessed it this means that the USB cable will power the drive as well. This is a definite plus since you will not have to carry around an extra power adapter with you. Also I like that the connection is a miniUSB, which means if you lose the cable that comes with the drive you can easily pick up another one that will work with the drive.

On the bottom of the drive you have your typical manufacturer information and serial number etc. On the 4 corners there are small rubber feet that will keep the drive from moving around on your desk.

Towards the bottom of the drive you will notice a small opening on the back. This is where the stand connects to the drive. To install the included stand all you have to do is line up the opening with the stand and press and lock it into place. Now you have a vertical drive that will look awesome on your desk!

  1. This drive is pretty sleek, allows you to bring around everywhere since it does not require an extra AC adapter. Sweet, HD movies on the go

  3. Can it not run on only one usb? My external hdd has a usb y connector but still works perfectly fine with only the main one plugged in.

  5. i know mine can run off one usb, it's a 2.5″ drive, but how does that relate to whether this Blu-ray drive can run off one or not? plus, why would they include a usb y cable on my external if they knew it could run off one usb slot anyways.

  6. There can be certain situations where one USB connector doesn't enough to power the HDD which is why there are two connectors.
