Cooler Master SK621 Low Profile Keyboard Review

Setup & Usage
This is a hybrid keyboard so you can use it in either wired or wireless (Bluetooth) mode. It does not come with any type of dongle so if you want to use it in Bluetooth mode your PC needs to support Bluetooth. Pairing the SK621 with your PC is really easy, first slide the switch on the side to enable Bluetooth mode. The hold FN+Z to enter pairing mode 1. There is a small LED on the Caps Lock key that will flash blue. Then on your PC add a new Bluetooth device and the keyboard will show up. It will make you type in a code on the keyboard and then you will be good to go.

The keyboard offers on-the-fly controls, which might be convenient for some people, but I’ve never been a fan of on-the-fly controls, especially for macros and per-key lighting etc. For those wanting to use the on-the-fly controls here is a cheat sheet.

Cooler Master does back this keyboard up with software, although the software will only detect the keyboard in wired mode. Once you save your setting in wired mode they are saved and will function in wireless mode though.

Cooler Master has grouped all of their software into their “Cooler Master Portal” here you can see what Cooler Master devices you have installed and easily install their control software as well as update their firmware.

When you first bring up the control software for the SK621 it brings you in to the wireless tab. Here you can set when sleep mode starts, how bright the LEDs will be in wireless mode, and if the LED ring stays on or off. Of course turning the LEDs down and the LED right off will increase the battery life.

ss2

After wireless we have the LED tab. Here you can customize the LED lighting on the board. There are quite a lot of different effects to choose from. You can easily select colors as well as the speed of the chosen effect.

The lighting on this keyboard looks quite good. The RGB LEDs look great and the floating keycap design allow for the LEDs to reflect off the bushed aluminum top plate.

One thing that was a little annoying was that in wired mode the charging LED on the Caps Lock key would stay illuminated (red when charging, green when charged). It kind of just throws everything off, especially if you have a cool RGB effect going on. I wish there was an option to turn it off in the software.

The next tab is Macro. Here you can easily record and assign macros. The process is quite easy and you can save as many macros as you like.

On to the “Key Map” tab. This shows an overview of the keyboard and allows you to reassign keys to either your created macros or another key on the keyboard. Obviously missing here is Windows commands, multimedia controls, or the ability to launch an application.

ss6

The last tab is “Profiles”. You have the ability to save up to 4 different profiles for the keyboard and you can import and export settings.
