Fractal Design Terra Mini-ITX Case Review

A Look Inside

The Terra is extremely easy to open up and get inside. The side panels simply lift up if you pull on them from the bottom, think of the gull-wing doors on a Delorean. The panel will just sit there, but if you want to fully remove it you simply pretty on the spring latch on the end of the panel and it will release. This might be the best implementation of a tool-less side panel that I’ve seen!

The top panel is easily removed as well by just pulling on the leather strap. With the top panel removed we can see that we have a sandwich-style interior design.

The sandwich design basically means that on one side you’ll have your motherboard and power supply and on the other is your graphics card. So as we take a look inside on the left side we have our graphics card mount. Fractal Design has a pre-installed PCI-Express 4.0 riser with its cables very creatively routed to not get in the way of anything.

On the right side you have your motherboard and power supply mounts. As expected as far as motherboard support it is only mini-ITX and for your power supply you can do SFX and SFX-L units. We can also take a look at the interior bottom of the case. Now you can install either a 120mm cooling fan, or a 2.5-inch SSD in the bottom of the case towards the front. If you plan to use an SFX-L power supply you cannot install a drive or fan here.

It is worth noting that the center “spine” part of the case and the bottom are made of steel. The really cool thing about the spine is that it is adjustable. So by removing screws on the top part of the case as well as the bottom you can actually adjust if you want more space in the graphics card section or the motherboard section.

Fractal Design has labeled the adjustments on the case and has provided clearances for graphics cards and CPU coolers, which you can see below. For those wondering in the max CPU configuration you can fit a 77 mm tall CPU cooler.

The GPU width actually depends on the GPU height so in the max GPU configuration with a GPU height of 131 mm you can fit a 72mm wide card, but if you have a 145mm tall card you can only fit a 62mm card. This means that the Terra would support a Founders Edition RTX 4090 in the max GPU config. This is better explained with the diagram below.

You can also install a 120mm radiator in the GPU section of the case. This of course limits the size of the graphics card you can install to a max length of only 200mm. See the diagram below which gives you clearances for the radiator and fan you can install here.

At the front of the case built into the front panel you’ll find a set a velcro ties, which are actually made to hold a 2.5-inch solid state drive. We can also see how Fractal has routed the power cable from the back of the case, up and around so you can easily connect it to your power supply.
