HyperX Alloy FPS RGB Gaming Keyboard + White Double-Shot PBT Keycaps Review

HyperX Alloy FPS RGB Overview

Taking a first look at the HyperX Alloy FPS RGB we can see that it is a full-size keyboard, so we have a full compliment of keys plus a full numberpad. You’ll notice the keyboard is frameless, which I am a huge fan of.

There are not any extra keys on the keyboard, but many of the keys have alternate functions. F1-F3 are used to switch between profiles, F6-F11 are for multimedia controls, F12 is used to enter game mode, where certain keys are disabled so you don’t accidentally exit your game. The up and down arrow keys are used to adjust the brightness of the RGB LEDs.

At the top-right corner you’ll find three LED indicators, these are for Game Mode, Number Lock, and CAPS Lock.

HyperX is using standard single-shot keycaps on this keyboard, which allows light to pass through them easily. Removing a few keycaps we find Kailh Silver Speed switches. “Speed” switches are basically shortened versions of existing switches. The Kailh Silver Speed switch is an extremely light (27cN) linear switch with shortened travel (3.5mm) and actuation (1.3mm) distances.

Looking at the keyboard from the side you can see the keyboard has a floating keycap design. This allows for the RGB lighting to really show and reflect off the metal top-plate. Like most gaming keyboards the first three rows of keys are angled down, while the last three are angled up. You can pop-out the feet on the bottom of the keyboard to make those angles more extreme.

Flipping the keyboard over we have those two pop-out feet and two smaller rubber feet which will keep the keyboard in place on your desk.

There are two connections on this keyboard, a normal USB port and a microUSB port. The microUSB is for the included USB cable and the normal port is a charging port for something like your mobile device.

The keyboard comes with a 1.8 mm braided USB cable. It has two connections on the end. One to power the keyboard and the other is for the USB port on the keyboard. This connection is power only though so you won’t be able to say connect your mouse to the keyboard and use it.
