Intel confirms next data centre CPU generation Sapphire Rapids, coming 2021 with DDR5, PCIe 5.0 And CXL 1.1

Intel seems to hit us with a truckload of information about their upcoming hardware. They today announced their brand new Xe GPU architecture, but that was not it. Intel also announced their CPU generation for 2021, named Sapphire Rapids. Read on!

They announced its next generation of data center chips, named Sapphire Rapids. This generation will come with support for all the next-generation technology, including DDR5, PCIe 5.0, and CXL 1.0 interconnect. This generation will follow the Ice Lake chips designated for H2, 2020, and will arrive in 2021.

Details about the fabrication process were not revealed, but it is likely to be the 10nm SuperFin Enhanced process since Intel’s 7nm is still some time away. Intel also announced that it will ship a 144 layer QLC later in 2020, giving a 50% density boost over the last-gen Intel QLC.

Intel Alder Lake

In addition, it also confirmed the Alder Lake CPU lineup, also set to arrive in 2021. These will not shrink the process but will offer better IPC performance and speeds.
